چکیده

We study the effects of thermal fluctuations on a small elastic ring. We derive analytical expressions for the correlation functions of the Euler angles, for the real space two–point correlation functions and for the probability distribution of writhe, as a function of the persistence lengths that determine the rigidity with respect to bending and twist. Fluctuation amplitudes diverge in the limit of vanishing twist rigidity. There is crossover from a small scale regime in which twist and writhe modes are uncoupled, to a large scale regime in which twist affects the spatial configurations of the ring. Small circular loops of extrachromosomal DNA (plasmids) play an important role in biological processes such as gene transfer between bacteria and in biothechnological applications where they are used as vectors for DNA cloning 3. The simplest model that captures both the topology and the physical properties of such an object is that of an elastic ring, and several studies of the writhing instability of twisted rings based on this model, were reported in recent years 4,5. However, these studies focused on the elastic response of the ring to mechanical forces and did not consider the effects of thermal fluctuations. These fluctuations dominate the physics of macromolecules and determine all their statistical properties, such as radii of gyration, dynamics in solution 6 , kinetics of loop formation, and dissociation of short DNA segments 7 and molecular beacons 8. Recently, we developed a theory of fluctuating elastic filaments, with arbitrary spontaneous curvature, torsion and twist in their 1

Fluctuating elastic rings: statics and dynamics.

We study the effects of thermal fluctuations on elastic rings. Analytical expressions are derived for correlation functions of Euler angles, mean-square distance between points on the ring contour, radius of gyration, and probability distribution of writhe fluctuations. Since fluctuation amplitudes diverge in the limit of vanishing twist rigidity, twist elasticity is essential for the descripti...

Thermal fluctuations of elastic filaments with spontaneous curvature and torsion.

We study the effects of thermal fluctuations on thin elastic filaments with spontaneous curvature and torsion. We derive analytical expressions for the orientational correlation functions and for the persistence length of helices and find that this length varies nonmonotonically with the strength of thermal fluctuations. In the weak fluctuation regime, the persistence length of a spontaneously ...

The effect of thermal fluctuations on Schulman area elasticity.

We study the elastic properties of a two-dimensional fluctuating surface whose area density is allowed to deviate from its optimal (Schulman) value. The behavior of such a surface is determined by an interplay between the area-dependent elastic energy, the curvature elasticity, and the entropy. We identify three different elastic regimes depending on the ratio Ap/As between the projected (frame...

0 Fluctuating Filaments I : Statistical Mechanics of Helices

We examine the effects of thermal fluctuations on thin elastic filaments with non– circular cross–section and arbitrary spontaneous curvature and torsion. Analytical expressions for orientational correlation functions and for the persistence length of helices are derived, and it is found that this length varies non–monotonically with the strength of thermal fluctuations. In the weak fluctuation...

Surface hydrodynamics on a freely standing layer of a polymer solution.

The dispersion relation and the power spectrum of the surface modes on a surface-active, freely standing film of a concentrated polymer solution are studied with a two-component fluid model of a viscoelastic material. The diagram of bending modes is obtained from an asymptotic analysis of the dispersion equation when the bending rigidity modulus is the main elastic effect on the layer interface...
